How to Plan a Relaxing Spa Day in Jaco Beach

What makes a good spa day

A spa day is not simply a long massage. It is a day built around the idea of slowing down, and the order of events matters as much as the treatments themselves. Do it well and you finish the day feeling genuinely rested. Do it carelessly — too many treatments squeezed together, a heavy lunch in the middle, no time to sit still — and you finish overstimulated and tired.

This is a plan for a spa day in the Jacó Beach area, whether you are staying in a villa, a condo or a hotel.

Morning: start slow

Sleep in. A spa day that begins with an alarm is already working against itself. Have a light breakfast — fruit, yogurt, eggs, coffee — rather than the large hotel buffet. Massage on a full stomach is uncomfortable, particularly in the abdominal area.

If you want to move, keep it gentle: a barefoot walk on the sand at low tide, or a swim. Avoid a hard surf session or a long run before a deep tissue massage; you will be too sore to enjoy it.

Good timing: aim for your first treatment at 10:00 or 11:00 AM, once breakfast has settled and before the day gets hot.

Late morning: the main massage

The centrepiece of the day. For a first spa day, choose a relaxation massage — gentle, flowing and easy to enjoy. If you know you carry tension in your back and shoulders, a deep tissue massage will deliver more lasting relief. See relaxation massage and deep tissue massage for the difference.

If you are with a partner, book a couples massage instead, and pick a shaded terrace for it.

Ninety minutes is the sweet spot. Sixty minutes feels short once the therapist finds the problem areas; two hours can be more than most people want in one stretch.

Midday: eat light, drink water

After a massage, the temptation is a large lunch and a cocktail. Resist both, at least for an hour. Have water first, then something light — ceviche, a salad, grilled fish, fruit. Alcohol immediately after a massage tends to undo the calm, and it dehydrates you.

This is also the right time to do almost nothing. A hammock, a pool float, a book. The mid-afternoon heat in Jacó is real, so shade and water are the priorities.

Afternoon: add-ons

If you want more than one treatment, this is where the second one goes — roughly two hours after the first.

  • Facial — cleansing, exfoliation, a mask and a gentle facial massage. A natural pairing with a morning massage.
  • Body scrub — exfoliation that leaves skin smooth, especially welcome after several days of sun and salt.
  • Reflexology — focused foot work, ideal if you have been walking or hiking.
  • Hot stone or aromatherapy — a second, shorter massage with a different character.

The full list is on our spa services page. Two treatments in a day is plenty for most people; three is usually one too many.

Late afternoon: the good part

The most underrated part of a spa day is the time after the treatments, when you are loose, warm and unhurried. Plan for it deliberately:

  • Stay off screens and out of planning conversations.
  • Watch the light change — the sunsets on this coast are the main event.
  • Keep dinner simple and close by: something on the terrace, or a short walk to a nearby restaurant.
  • Go to bed early. A relaxed body sleep is deep sleep.

Sequencing if you are doing a full spa day

A tested order for a complete day:

  1. 10:00 AM — 90-minute relaxation or deep tissue massage
  2. 11:30 AM — water, rest in the shade
  3. 12:30 PM — light lunch
  4. 2:00 PM — body scrub or facial
  5. 3:30 PM — pool, hammock, book
  6. 5:30 PM — shower and change
  7. 6:00 PM — sunset on the terrace
  8. 7:30 PM — light dinner

Adjust the start time to avoid the hottest hours if you are planning anything outdoors.

Practical preparation

  • Book ahead. In high season (December to April), treatments and therapists fill up. A day or two of notice is sensible; more for groups.
  • Shower first. Salt, sand and sunscreen do not belong on a massage table.
  • Skip the sun before a facial. Fresh sunburn and exfoliation do not mix.
  • Mention pregnancy, injuries and medications. Treatments are adapted accordingly.
  • Avoid alcohol before treatments and go easy afterwards.
  • Wear loose clothing for afterwards — no need to dress up.
  • Keep the evening free. A spa day that ends with a long drive or a big night out wastes the effort.

Doing a spa day with a group

The same structure scales up. For a group, a villa setup with several therapists works best: the group can rotate through treatments while others swim and eat, and nobody has to leave the property. See group massage for the logistics and costs.
