What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage uses slow strokes and sustained, firmer pressure to work into the deeper layers of muscle. Rather than covering the whole body evenly, the therapist spends more time on the areas that feel tight or restricted – often the upper back, neck, lower back, hips and calves.

It is not supposed to be painful. Some areas may feel intense, but you should always be able to breathe normally and relax into the pressure. Your therapist will check in during the session, and you can ask for lighter or firmer pressure at any time.

Who it is ideal for

Deep tissue work is popular with people who are active on vacation:

• Surfers – paddling loads the shoulders, upper back and neck, and pop-ups work the hips and lower back.
• Hikers and adventure tour guests – calves, hamstrings and glutes after waterfall hikes and canopy tours.
• Golfers and anglers – rotation-heavy days on the course or a long day reeling on a charter from Los Sueños.
• Desk workers on a "workation" – neck and shoulder tension from laptops and travel.

What to expect during the session

After a short conversation about your activity level and any problem areas, the therapist starts with lighter warm-up strokes before gradually increasing pressure. Expect a mix of forearm and elbow work, slow gliding strokes and sustained holds on tight spots. Many guests combine deep tissue on the back and shoulders with lighter work on the rest of the body.

When deep tissue is not appropriate

Please tell your therapist before the session if you are pregnant, have a recent injury, a blood-clotting condition, take blood thinners, have had recent surgery, or have bad sunburn. In those cases we may adjust the treatment or suggest a lighter massage. Massage is a wellness service and is not a substitute for medical care.

Aftercare

• Drink water and keep the rest of the day light.
• Some mild soreness the next day is normal after firmer work.
• If you are surfing again tomorrow, a gentle stretch in the morning helps.

Pricing and booking

Deep tissue massage is $75 per hour per person, with a 25% deposit to reserve. We come to villas, condos, hotels and rentals in Jacó, Playa Hermosa, Herradura and Los Sueños. For two people at once, book a couples massage.
