Massage in Jaco Costa Rica: Complete Visitor's Guide

Getting a massage in Jacó: the basics
Jací, on Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast, is a surf town with a large seasonal population of visitors from North America and Europe. Because of that, massage is an established part of the local tourist economy — and the range of styles and prices reflects it.
This guide covers what is actually available, how much you should pay, and how to have a good experience whether you book in a spa or have a therapist come to you.
Massage styles you will find here
Swedish or relaxation massage. The classic full-body massage using long, flowing strokes and light to medium pressure. It is the best choice for first-timers and for anyone who simply wants to switch off. More: relaxation massage in Jaco.
Deep tissue massage. Slower, firmer work that targets the deeper muscle layers, usually focusing on problem areas like the shoulders, upper back and hips. Popular with surfers. More: deep tissue massage.
Sports massage. A structured treatment aimed at people who are active, often used around training or after a big day on the water.
Hot stone massage. Warm stones used alongside massage strokes. Very relaxing, especially in the evening.
Aromatherapy massage. A relaxation or Swedish massage with a chosen essential oil blend.
Couples massage. Two people, two therapists, one room — or in our case, one villa terrace. More: couples massage in Jaco.
Prenatal massage. A gentler treatment adapted for pregnancy, usually done in a side-lying position. Always mention your trimester and any advice from your doctor.
Reflexology, facials and body scrubs. Shorter or add-on treatments that combine well with a massage for a spa day.
What a massage should cost
In the Jacó area, expect a wide range. Independent local spas can start lower, resort spas are at the top end, and mobile services usually sit in between with a flat hourly rate.
Our pricing is $75 per hour per person, with the therapist, professional table, fresh linens, oils and travel within Jacó, Los Sueños, Herradura and Playa Hermosa included. A 25% deposit reserves the appointment.
Whatever you book, confirm these three things before you commit: the total price, whether travel or tax is extra, and the cancellation terms.
What happens at a mobile appointment
If you have never had a therapist come to you, the process is simpler than you might think.
- You book on WhatsApp with your date, time, number of people, treatment and location.
- We confirm and send a deposit amount.
- The therapist arrives 10 to 15 minutes before your start time.
- Setup takes a few minutes — the table goes up, linens are laid out, oils and music are prepared.
- Your treatment runs for the full booked time.
- The therapist packs up and leaves with everything, including the linens.
You do not need to provide towels, oils or music. You only need a quiet space of roughly 2 × 3 meters per table and access to the property.
Massage etiquette in Costa Rica
Massage in Costa Rica follows international norms. A few practical points:
- Undress to your comfort level. You will be covered with sheets at all times, and only the area being worked on is uncovered.
- Speak up about pressure. Good therapists ask, but if they do not, say something. "A little lighter" and "a little firmer" are always acceptable.
- Say no to anything you do not want. You can decline any part of a treatment, including working on a particular area.
- Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory. If the service was good, 10% is a common gesture.
- Punctuality matters if you have booked a fixed window, especially when several appointments are scheduled back to back.
Choosing between a spa and a mobile massage
Choose a spa if you want facilities like a steam room, a pool or a full-day retreat experience, or if you are staying at a hotel that has one.
Choose a mobile massage if you would rather not drive, if you are staying in a villa or rental away from town, if you are travelling with a group or family, or if you want to go straight from the massage to dinner or bed.
Many visitors end up doing both: a spa visit once during the trip, and mobile massages at the villa on the days when they would rather stay put.
Timing your massage
- After arrival: excellent for shaking off stiff shoulders from flights and the drive from San José.
- Mid-trip: the day after a big surf session or a long hike.
- Before departure: a calm last evening instead of a rushed one.
- Avoid booking immediately before an adventure activity; you should be relaxed, not rushed.
Booking in high and low season
December to April is peak season, when accommodation fills and therapists are busy. Book a day or two ahead, particularly for evening slots, weekends and couples massages. May to November is the green season: fewer visitors, easier scheduling, but afternoon rain is common, so morning appointments or a covered terrace are wise.
