What "mobile massage" actually means

Outside Costa Rica, most people associate massage with a clinic or a spa. A mobile massage inverts that: the therapist travels to you with everything needed to perform a professional treatment, and your home becomes the treatment room for an hour or two.

In the Jacó area this is a common and well-established way to book. The reason is geography. The coast between Jacó, Los Sueños, Herradura and Playa Hermosa is spread out over several kilometers of beach road and steep hillside access roads. A trip into town and back easily consumes an hour that could have been spent relaxing.

What the therapist brings

A properly equipped mobile therapist travels with:

A professional, padded massage table with a face cradle
A clean set of sheets and towels for each guest
Massage oils and creams, plus aromatherapy blends if requested
A small speaker with relaxing music
Everything needed for add-on treatments such as hot stones, scrubs or facials

All of it arrives and all of it leaves. You are not left with laundry or equipment, and there is nothing to pack away afterwards.

What you need to provide

Very little:

Space. Roughly 2 × 3 meters of clear, level floor or terrace per table. Two tables for a couples massage need about 4 × 3 meters.
Access. Let the gate guard or front desk know a therapist is coming. In gated communities we send the therapist's name when confirming.
A quiet environment. Television off, phones silenced, and pets in another room.
Comfortable temperature. Air conditioning, a fan or natural breeze — whichever suits you.

That is the entire list. If space is tight, the therapist will move a chair or a small table and put it back afterwards.

Setting up in different kinds of accommodation

Villas

Villas are the best-case scenario. Terraces, pool decks and large living rooms give plenty of options, and the setting itself adds a lot to the experience — see private villa massage.

Condos

Condos and apartments in beachfront towers usually work well, with a balcony or living area as the treatment space. Building access and parking are the main logistics to sort out. See hotel and condo massage.

Hotel rooms

Hotel rooms are the tightest option but still workable. A queen or king room can usually accommodate one table with a little furniture movement. Two tables may require a suite, a living area or a large balcony.

Airbnbs and vacation rentals

Who mobile massage suits best

Groups and celebrations. With multiple therapists, several people can be treated at once. See group massage.
Families. Parents can take turns while children nap in a nearby room.
Couples. A private side-by-side session without leaving the villa.
Anyone recovering from travel. No need to drive anywhere after a treatment.
Long-stay guests and residents. Weekly or biweekly appointments on a fixed schedule.

Scheduling tips

Consider when you actually want to be relaxed. Mid-morning works for guests who surf at sunrise. Early afternoon suits people heading out for dinner later. Late afternoon and early evening are the most requested slots, especially on the west-facing side of the coast where the sunset is part of the appeal.

Book a day or two ahead in high season (December to April) and around holidays. Same-day appointments are frequently possible in the green season, but mornings are the safest bet then, because afternoon rain is common from May to November.

Pricing

Mobile massage in this area is usually charged at a flat hourly rate. Ours is $75 per hour per person, which includes travel within Jacó, Los Sueños, Herradura and Playa Hermosa, plus all equipment and supplies. A 25% deposit confirms the booking.
