Frequently Asked Questions About Massage Services in Costa Rica

Prices and payment
How much does a massage cost in Costa Rica?
It varies widely by region and setting. In the Jacó area, independent spas start lower, resort spas are at the top of the range, and mobile therapists usually charge a flat hourly rate. Ours is $75 per hour per person, with equipment, supplies and travel within Jacó, Los Sueños, Herradura and Playa Hermosa included.
How do I pay?
Cash in US dollars or Costa Rican colones is most common, and many therapists accept cards or digital payments. A deposit is usually required to hold a booking. With us, a 25% deposit confirms the appointment and the balance is paid at the session — see the booking and cancellation policy.
Should I tip?
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Around 10% is a common gesture for good service, similar to restaurants. If paying by card, you can usually add it.
Is the price negotiable?
Rates are generally fixed. It is fine to compare providers, but aggressive haggling is not the norm in Costa Rica and can sour the appointment before it starts.
Logistics and booking
How far in advance should I book?
In high season (December to April) book a day or two ahead, and more for evenings, weekends, couples appointments or groups. In the green season (May to November), same-day bookings are often possible — mornings are the safest bet because afternoon rain is common.
What if I need to cancel?
Policies differ. Find out before paying a deposit. Our terms are in the booking and cancellation policy.
Do you come to my accommodation?
Yes — that is exactly what a mobile massage is. We travel to villas, condos, hotels, Airbnbs and other rentals. See mobile massage.
What do I need to provide?
A quiet, level space of about 2 × 3 meters per table, and access to the property. Everything else — table, linens, oils, music, supplies for add-on treatments — arrives with the therapist.
Do I need to tell the hotel or host?
It helps. Let the front desk or gate guard know a therapist is arriving. In gated communities, we send the therapist's name when confirming so you or your property manager can register them.
During the appointment
What do I wear?
Undress to your comfort level. You are covered with sheets throughout, and only the area being treated is uncovered. Some guests keep underwear on; that is entirely normal.
Will it hurt?
A relaxation massage should not. Deep tissue work can feel intense on tight spots, but it should never be sharp or unbearable, and you should be able to breathe normally. Tell the therapist if you want less pressure — that is not a complaint, it is useful information.
Can I ask for specific areas to be avoided or focused on?
Always. Tell the therapist at the start, and speak up during the session if something changes.
Can I fall asleep?
Yes. It happens constantly and therapists take it as a compliment.
Do I have to talk?
No. Many guests prefer silence, and therapists will follow your lead. If you would rather not chat, say so at the start.
What if I am uncomfortable with anything?
End the treatment. You can stop at any point, for any reason, without explanation.
Health and safety
Is massage safe?
For most healthy adults, yes. Massage is a wellness service, not a medical treatment. Tell your therapist if you are pregnant, have an injury, a skin condition, a blood-clotting disorder, take blood thinners, or have had recent surgery. In some cases the treatment will be adapted; occasionally it should be postponed.
Can I have a massage if I am pregnant?
Yes, with adjustments — usually side-lying positioning and lighter pressure, and typically after the first trimester. Mention your trimester and any guidance from your doctor when booking.
Can I have a massage with sunburn?
Not over burned skin. Tell the therapist and they will work elsewhere or use very light pressure. If you are badly burned, wait a day.
Should I massage a sports injury?
Not while it is acute, swollen or bruised. Once it has settled, gentle work can help. For persistent pain, see a doctor.
What about the oils and allergies?
Tell us about allergies or sensitivities when booking — nuts, fragrances, latex and adhesives are the usual concerns. Unscented oil is always available.
Is it safe for a solo traveller?
Yes. If you prefer, book with a well-reviewed provider, share the appointment time with someone you trust, and choose a space where you feel comfortable.
Etiquette and culture
Is massage legal and regulated in Costa Rica?
Massage and spa services operate as legitimate businesses throughout the tourist areas. As everywhere, reputation and reviews are the best guide to quality.
Is nudity required?
No. You undress to your own comfort level and remain covered at all times.
Are male and female therapists available?
Yes, generally. If you have a preference, say so when booking so it can be arranged.
Should I shower before or after?
Before, ideally — especially after the beach. Afterwards, some guests shower to remove oil; others prefer to let it absorb. Both are fine.
Treatments and styles
What is the difference between a relaxation and a deep tissue massage?
Relaxation massage is gentle and flowing, covering the whole body to help you unwind. Deep tissue is slower and firmer, targeting specific tight areas. We compare them in detail in our guide to deep tissue vs. relaxation massage.
How long should a massage be?
Sixty minutes for a single area or a quick reset, ninety minutes for a full-body treatment with time on problem spots. Two hours suits guests who want a thorough session or several treatments combined.
Can I combine treatments?
Yes. Facials, body scrubs and reflexology combine well with any massage — see the full spa services menu.
